Friday 18th

Head up into the Kerio valley on what will be a 4 hour journey. We go to Marigat turn west to Cabernet, then left to Cheptebo.

Between Marigat and Cabernet we stop at William's log hive factory. This is a flat area under an acacia tree. We take the factory tour, which involves standing on the same spot and turning through 360 degrees. We are told that William 's father made log hives here as well.

As we enter the Kerio valley we climb up the mountain roads and the scenery is breathtaking.

We pass over Chebloch gorge. This is a gorge cut into the rock by water erosion. It is about 3 metres wide and 130 metres deep. Now there is only a small stream at the bottom. In the rainy season it fills up, overflows and floods the road.
Mmm
We arrive at Cheptebo conference and training centre (WWW.cheptebordcentre.org ). Beesabroad hope to work with the people here to establish a training apiary. Monday and Tuesday John and Mary will be using the facilities here to train a group of 30 beekeepers from all round this area.

John and I explore the farm here and find 3 catcher boxes hanging under the trees. These are 5 frame Top Bar hives being used as bait boxes. We use wax and lemon grass to 'bait' one of the boxes. This way when the training is done we can say here is one we did earlier.

Tomorrow if the weather stays dry we plan to go back to the Synyati group and finish the training.
